In the report "The Imperatives for Automation Success", McKinsey identified 3 key factors for achieving automation success:

1. Make automation a strategic priority

An automation program tends to outperform when it is aligned with the overall business strategy and forms an integral part of the C-suite agenda. Many organizations, for example, underestimate the amount of change management and stakeholder communications needed to engender a cultural or behavioral shift. Executive sponsorship is also necessary for thinking big and ensuring accountability.

2. Focus on people as much as technology

As the saying goes, ""One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man."" A myopic focus on technology alone often causes automation programs to stall. After all, changing mindset is much more challenging than training skillsets.

Successful organizations tend to empower their people, particular the emerging citizen developer class, by reskilling and upskilling them. In addition, greater emphasis is placed on augmenting their employees with a digital assistant or cobot, as opposed to displacing/replacing them outright. This not only facilitates the retention of human expertise through ""human-in-the-loop"" solutions, but also allay a lot of the automation anxiety that inevitably surfaces.

3. Develop an operating model that enables scaling

To achieve tangible and sustainable benefits from automation, it is imperative to prevent automation silos where individual business units or teams pursue their own automation programs without central coordination and oversight. Equally, to avoid pilot purgatory, organizations need to invest in having the right operating model that enables automation at scale.
